This striking lithograph is titled "Lenox Avenue," created in 1938 by the American artist Sargent Claude Johnson (1888–1967). Johnson was a prominent figure of the Harlem Renaissance, and this work is a quintessential example of how he blended Modernist abstraction with African and African-American cultural motifs. Johnson's goal was often to "show the natural beauty and dignity in [the Black] type," and here he celebrates the cultural vibrance of Harlem through a sophisticated, modern lens.
