This dynamic sketch is part of Leonardo's preparatory study for an equestrian monument by Leonardo da Vinci, created around 1485–1488. It depicts a rearing horse with a rider, intended to be a monument to Francesco Sforza, the Duke of Milan. The project, known as Gran Cavallo or Leonardo's Horse, was commissioned by Ludovico Sforza but was never cast in bronze due to political unrest and the French invasion of Milan.
